How DISC Behavioural Assessments Help Set Company And Team Objectives
One of the most versatile and adaptable behavioural assessment methodologies available to businesses is D.I.S.C., which stands for Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and ‘Conscientiousness’ or ‘Compliance’ (depending on the version used). Unlike some other systems, the acronym evaluates behavioural or communication tendencies in different contexts rather than categorising individuals into set personality types.
In this article, we’ll look at how a DISC behavioural assessment can help you to set company and team objectives. However, before we begin, it’s worth noting that there are various different versions of DISC, and the terminology used can change from report to report, so we will be referring to the TTI Success Insight version of DISC, which we use here at Penguin Learning.
What Is The DISC Behavioural Assessment?
The DISC assessment evaluates individuals based on four observable behavioural styles.
These are:
D: Dominance: goal-oriented and focused on problem-solving and results
I: Influence: people-focused and engaged in building interpersonal relationships and networks
S: Steadiness: reliable and supportive, prioritising consistency and patience in their interactions
C: Compliance: precise and analytical, valuing standards, procedures, and accuracy
Individuals aren’t generally one style or another, but show a variety of characteristics from multiple categories that express themselves under different circumstances. Some people may find they have a high level of traits in one category, while others are more balanced. Examining and analysing the report provides a variety of action-oriented insights to help your team members navigate stress and conflict, drive productivity and self-awareness, and cultivate better relationships with their colleagues.
Benefits Of DISC Assessment For UK Businesses
Understanding your team members’ likely behavioural responses and communication preferences can give you and your leaders a strategic advantage, as it allows you to tailor your recruitment and development approaches, successfully resolve issues between colleagues, and help ensure that each individual can positively contribute to the best of their abilities. It can also increase team dynamics and harmony by identifying overlapping strengths and potential friction points between members, so that proactive steps can be taken to strengthen team cohesion.
Self-Awareness
Many people are not aware of certain traits they possess, so a DISC behavioural assessment is a good way of encouraging greater self-reflection and awareness. By increasing your staff’s self-awareness and understanding of their own responses, you can help them consciously choose to change or adapt their behaviour to meet the requirements of each situation.
Teambuilding
DISC is an excellent tool for leaders to improve positive communication channels and collaboration within their teams. The assessment can help reduce conflicts and enable leaders to set objectives that are well aligned with the strengths and capabilities of each individual and the team as a whole.
Improved Communication And Conflict Management
Helping your staff understand their DISC profiles benefits communication within the wider company, and helps reduce conflict, as (hopefully) everyone will have a better understanding of the way that other people respond in various situations, increasing empathy and positive interactions.
